Subject : Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition
The Gallery Lumiere is holding an exhibition of Henri Cartier-Bresson's photographic works. Regarded one of the greatest photographers, Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in 1908 in France and started taking photography in 1931. He gained popularity when he founded the cooperative picture agency 'Magnum' after the Second World War with fellow photographers such as Robert Kappa, David Seymour, and George Roger. With the publication of his book 'The Decisive Moment', he became the most popular photographer of the 1950s. The 'decisive moment' is a short spontaneous moment in which the subject, the subject's surroundings, and the artist's intentions form a perfect picture. Through 'The Decisive Moment' series, we can find humor and irony in everyday life that we missed or failed to recognize. The decisive moment, according to the definition of Cartier-Bresson, is "the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression". The exhibition features Cartier-Bresson's 'decisive moment' series and portraits of anonymous people and celebrities such as the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, and the artist Alberto Giacometti. Cartier-Bresson photographed each of the subjects of his portraits with affection and earnestness.
In addition, books on Henri Cartier-Bresson, including a rare edition of "The decisive moment", which was published in 1952 with its covers designed by Henri Matisse, will be displayed as well.
This exhibition is an extension of Gallery Lumiere's opening exhibition of masterpiece photographs of the 20th century. Through the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, the master photographer of the 20th century who took photography to a level of art, visitors can think about the meaning of photographs of the 20th century, and appreciate traditional film photography in the era of digital art.
