The Hometown of Deeply Rooted and Unique Traditional Folk Cultures
Gangwon-do keeps its unique traditional folk culture such as Gangnung Kwanno Mask Drama which is the only mask pantomime in Korea and Cheongson Arirang which is the prototype of the arirang song. With Taeback Mountain Range as its center, Gangwon-do is divided into Yongdong (eastern) part and Yongseo (western part) and each part has kept its own unique folk culture.
In Yongdong region including the East Coast area, many folk dramas and folk games have been developed like Gangnung Kwanno Mask Drama which is the only mask pantomime in Korea, Buckpyoung Wonnim-Nori and Sokcho Saja- Nori. In Yongseo Inland region, there are many unique major folk cultural assets such as Cheongson Arirang which is the prototype of Arirang Song and as Neowa-jib (a wooden board-roofed house) which can be seen only in mountain areas.
In order to preserve and explore such various traditional folk cultures, Gangwon-do holds the Folk Arts Contest every year. Through this contest started in Wonju in 1983 for the first time, 231 kinds of traditional folk arts have been newly explored such as: Whoedaji-Sound of Whengsong, Chomsangnal Okjidari Snatching Game of Gangnung, Baranggol labor song of Yanggu and the A-Frame Carrier Game of Tolsannyong. Together with there, Gangwon-do tries to preserve folk arts and culture by designating villages or schools for their succession. Villages and schools are designated based on the folk arts works that won at the National or the Provincial Folk Arts Contest, and are managed autonomously by establishing preservation sponsoring organizations. At present, 74 items are selected and managed for their preservation.
The folk arts of Gangwon-do and the excellency of Gangwon-do culture have been widely recognized through winning the Premier's Prize 5 times and the Prize of Minister of Cultures 10 times at various contests since Whengsong Wheydaji Sound won the Presidential Prize at the National Folk Arts Contest in 1984.
Gangwon-do has also held 20 kinds of local culture festivals including Gangnung Danoje designated as the national culture festival representing Gangwon-do Province, and 26 kinds of local culture and arts festivals every year at various cities and counties such as Bomnae Comprehensive Arts Festival, Yongdong Comprehensive Arts Festival, Chiack Comprehensive Arts Festival and Sokcho Comprehensive Arts Festival. By holding these festivals with a variety of programs, Gangwon-do induces more Gangwon-do people's participation and makes these events truly festive occasions.
