Tip
If this is your first visit to Ganghwa, this itinerary is definitely the best. It is highly recommended to obtain enough basic information about Ganghwa at the Historical Hall before continuing on the rest of the tour. Gwanseongbo Garrison is a historic battle site from ‘Sinmiyangyo’ or literally ‘the American Disturbance of 1871’, an American invasion triggered by the sinking of a US marine merchant ship, the General Sherman , by the Koreans. Today, it is a recreational space with picturesque promenade lanes, which is also great for picnicking. At Chojijin Garrison, one can still see pine trees bearing bullet scars from the Unyo Incident (1875), sparked by the Japanese battleship Unyo intruding at Ganghwa, as well as authentic samples of hongipo, an artillery piece used at this battle. At Jeondeungsa, find out about the legend associated with its naked woman’s sculptures under the eaves of the temple buildings, and appreciate its main shrine, ‘Daeungjeon,’ a designated treasure. Higher up, at Bunoridondae Fortification near Dongmak Beach you can contemplate the immense stretch of the tidal wetland softly rolling itself open before the eye.
