Yonghyeon-dong has now become an almost interchangeable word for multeombeongi dishes. This nickname for monk fish, coined in Incheon, comes from the onomatopoeia Teombeong, which imitates the splash when, shocked by the ugly appearance of the fish, the fisherman lets it drop back into the water.

The destiny of this ugly and ill-loved fish was radically transformed during the 1960’s, when fish had become rare and costly. During this time, the homely fish made its debut onto Korean tables as a cheap fish soup for day laborers in the Dongincheon (East Incheon) Station area.

One by one, restaurants specialized in monk fish, appeared in the Yonghyeon-dong area, to finally make multeombeongi one of the specialty dishes of Incheon. At present, there are altogether seven restaurants on Yonghyeon-dong’s monk fish street serving the mouth-watering fish.

Whether steamed or stewed, it is always fiery-red, prepared with sea squirts and shellfish meat, and vegetables like shepherd’s purse, mushrooms and many others. The dish comes in three sizes, and the price ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 won.
