We will open up the unrevealed places where monks and nuns live and practice, to you and who are visiting us for the Sep 26th ~ Oct 31th.

- What is Templestay?

Over 1600 years temples provide spiritual refuge for Korean Buddhists. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism is opening Korean temples where you can experience the Korean sunims life, Korean traditional culture, and its beauty as well.
Beginning with the morning yebul(ceremony), Seon meditation, Bal-woo gongyang(monastic meal), tea ceremony, your retreat follows the pattern of daily temple life that Korean snims follow.

- Brief explanation of programs

* Dharma Ceremony in the morning
Early in the morning, usually around 3am, every monk and other people in the temple gather in the Main Buddha Hall and have a Dharma ceremony. This magnificent Dharma Ceremony clears all dust from your mind and all stray thoughts from your head.  

* Seon Meditation
Seon is a Korean word for Buddhist meditation. It is also called Zen (Japan) or Chan (China).
Korea has become the lead country of Seon tradition. While you stay in the temple, you will be offered chances to do Seon meditation and search for your true self.

* Tea Ceremony
Many countries have a tea custom, but Korean temples' tea custom is quite unique. This tradition is not done lightly, but is almost a form of meditation.

* Four bowl meal
Balwoogongyang is a unique and special method of eating in Buddhism.
Balwoo means bowls containing a moderate amount, and can also be referred to as monks eating style. With Balwoo, you eat only vegetables. It follows buddhist rules for all sentient being. Having a meal, you can refresh your mind to be appreciative for the whole environment.

* Woolruk
It is the time for everybody in the temple to work. Depending on the season, people sweep the ground of the temple, make food, repair the temple, or other necessary labor. During this time, you can experience temple life fully.

* Introduction of temple
Most Korean temples have hundreds of years of tradition. Every little pagoda or structure of each temple or hall has been formed in consideration of Buddha's teaching. You will receive the deep meaning of the temple and what the Buddha taught through information of each temple.

* Printing Tripitaka
Tripitaka Koreana is the entire Buddhist canon carved onto wood blocks, for printing on paper, and is a World Cultural Asset designated by UNESCO. As it shows, ancient Korean printing skill was one of the best in the world. During this time, we will offer tourists the chance to print a part of the Tripitaka and take it home.

* Rubbings
Temples and their surroundings have a lot of objects with carved pictures and inscriptions. This program also offers the chance to experience making rubbings to take home.  

* Buddhist martial art
As a method of buddhist practice among monks, Seon Mu Do is a form of buddhist martial art. It is a form which mixes seon and martial arts. Monks who have been practicing for a long time will teach whoever wants to learn.  

* Making Traditional lantern
One of the representative offerings for Buddha is a lantern. Korean lanterns have been made for around 1,300 years, from the 7th or 8th century. A lot of beautiful lanterns will be displayed during this program, you can see the process of making lanterns and you can make one for yourself.

* Making Green Tea
There are a lot of Korean temples which make green tea. When you go to the temple which has the 'making green tea' program, you can join every process of making traditional green tea.

* Traditional Games
Traditional seesaws, a game of yoot and others, there are more than 350 kinds of Korean traditional games. In the temple, you can enjoy a lot of Korean traditional games.

* Bum Pae
Bum Pae is one of the buddhist offerings in Buddhism. It was started in India a long time ago, and from the 9th century Korean temples started to sing and play this music.
You can hear traditional Buddhist voices in the temple.
