Subject : Seokjeondaeje Memorial Rite
This traditional memorial rite for celebrating Confucius, adored as the greatest man of virtue and scholar in the Oriental world, was first observed at the national academic institution called Taehak in A.D. 372 during the reign of King Sosurim of the Goguryeo Kingdom. During the Joseon Dynasty, which was designed as a Confucian state by its founders, it developed into a nation-wide event. Being held twice each year according to the lunar calendar, some care should be taken to place the date exactly. Currently, the rites take place in the Daeseongjeon Hall within the Sungkyunkwan University, where the memorial tablet of Confucius has been preserved. Observing the rite, spectators can get some knowledge of traditional Korean ritual culture.
