Dano - May 5th of the lunar calendar when Koreans prayed for a good harvest - is one of the three major traditional holidays along with Seolnal(lunar new year's day) and Chusoek(Korean thanksgiving day). On Dano day, various traditional events are held - women wash their hair with iris water and go out to swing while men enjoy ssireum (traditional Korean wrestling).
The fan is an item closely related to Dano, because until the late Joseon dynasty, there was a custom of offering fans as a present on Dano day. To celebrate Dano, the traditional cultural center Samcheonggak is holding an exhibition featuring the biggest fan in the world and about 30 traditional Korean fans such as Hapjukseon, (fans with double bamboo slats), and taegeukseon (fans with Korean symbols of taegeuk) made by the best craftsmen in Korea. In addition, on June 20th, a fan making class for children will be held.
