The Korean Queer Culture Festival, an annual festival for the sexual minority in Korea, is held this year for the fifth time since 2000.
As part of the festival, the Queer Film Festival will be held from June 25 to 30 at Art Cube, a cultural space in Ilju Art House which is located in the Hungguk Life Insurance building in Gwanghwamun.
Compared to the 1990s, it is much easier to see queer movies in Korea these days, with a more variety of queer films to choose from. But it's quite difficult to see Asian characters in most queer films introduced to the public in Korea, which are mostly films produced in the West. The Queer Film Festival in Seoul introduces a variety of Asian queer films which present stories about Asian gay, lesbians from an Asian perspective. Korean films featured in the festival include "Three Queer Stories that Happened in Bogildo", an omnibus film consisting of three short films, and a 87-minute feature film 'Desire', which is a story about a woman, her husband, and his gay lover. The Queer Short Film 1 consists of three short queer films of Korea, and the Queer Short Film 2 features queer films from Hong Kong and Japan. In addition, Alice Wang's "Love Me, if You Can," a Hong Kong film that looks at an age-old love story that moves beyond time and gender boundaries will be featured as well.
