A major retrospective on Chagall, the greatest colorist of the 20th century, will be held for the first time in Korea.

Followed by the Grand-Palais in Paris and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Seoul Arts Center is holding a major Chagall retrospective for three months, featuring 120 pieces of Chagall's works ranging from 1915 to the 1980s.

One of the most creative and imaginative artists of the 20th century, Chagall was influenced by the strong colors of Fauvist pictures, and the new interpretation of space in Cubist pictures. Under such influences, Chagall painted romantic pictures inspired by Russian folklore and the Jewish bible. Although he was praised as the father of surrealism for his dreamlike pictures, his creative and mystical works did not belong to any art movement.

Animals, flowers, local village customs, brides and lovers are frequent subjects of Chagall's pictures. In particular, women in his pictures light up the canvas, and musical items are featured along with women in the paintings drawn in the later part of his career. The brilliant colors, familiar themes and images of his pictures are part of the reason why people around the world adore his works.

The Chagall retrospective at the Seoul Arts Center will be a good chance to appreciate and understand his works.
