Under the old transportation fare system, passengers had to pay the fare each time they transferred from bus to subway and vice versa. However, under the new system, passengers can pay the fare according to the distance they traveled, regardless of how many times they transferred. From July 1st, passengers transferring to the subway should place their transportation card on the card reader when they get off the bus to have the subway fare exempted or discounted. However, passengers transferring from the inter-city express bus (red bus) cannot get a discount. Passengers may pay cash as well, but cash payers cannot get a discount when they transfer, and should pay an extra charge of 100 won for buses and subways, and 50 won for downtown circular buses (yellow bus).

With the new fare system, passengers are able to save up to 100 won when traveling between 10 kilometers and 18 kilometers, and up to 200 won for distances over 20 kilometers.
For example, passengers going to Incheon City Hall from Seoul City Hall (30.7km) should pay 1,200 won, and 1,400 won to Suwon station (40.9km).

According to the new transportation fare system, the 'T-money card' will substitute for the old transportation cards. However, old transportation cards can be used as well. The 'T-money' card has an IC chip embedded, and can be used on the subway and buses in Seoul, Gyeonggido and Incheon.
There are two kinds of pre-paid T-money cards which are 1500 won and 2500 won each. They can be purchased and charged at subway ticket offices. The post-payment T- money card is a credit card with transportation card functions.
Passengers transferring to the subway or other buses should place the card on the card reader when they get off the bus to get a discount.
