Subject : Korean astronomical relics exhibition
The National Folk Museum of Korea is holding an exhibition of Korean astronomical relics, which is titled 'Heaven and Man, Principles and Ideals'. Around 100 relics related to astronomy including folding screens, pictures, astrolabes, and astronomical charts will be featured in the exhibition. The exhibition will provide a chance to see and understand the ancient Koreans' ideas about the sky.
This exhibition consists of four sections.
The first section features royal relics such as the 'Ilwolobongbyung', a folding screen placed behind the king's throne.
The second section features ancient astronomical instruments such as sundials and astronomical charts. In particular, the 4-meter-long folding screen 'Shingubupcheonmundo' displays a Western astronomical chart created by the German missionary Kogler along with a Korean one.
The third section features ancient astronomical devices created by Korean scientists, such as the 'Honcheonui', a wooden armillary sphere, and the 'Pyunghonui', a constellation chart which also tells the time.
The fourth section features astronomical instruments created for religious purposes. A distinctive relic displayed in this section is the 'Geumdongcheonmundo', a round gilt-bronze constellation chart with each star marked with pearls.
The exhibition will be held from July 14 to August 23 at the National Folk Museum of Korea, and an opening ceremony will be held on July 13, 4:00 pm.
