'Sa' and 'jik' of 'Sajikdaeje' mean the gods of earth and harvest, respectively. The religious service for the two gods, called Sajikdaeje, was performed to pray for the peace and good harvest of the nation.
The Rite, dating back to the Three Kingdoms Period, was renewed and expanded during the Goryeo and the Joseon Dynasties. The Sajikdan Altar was restored to the original state in 1988 from the ruins since the Japanese occupation.
