[Korea] Forest fire destroys 1,300-year-old Naksansa Temple Forest fire destroys 1,300-year-old temple, forces residents to evacuate

Date April 06, 2005

A raging forest fire fanned by dry and strong winds destroyed a 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, on Tuesday (April 5), after forcing thousands of residents to evacuate overnight.

Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan issued an emergency directive to mobilize all equipment to contain the wild fire in Yangyang and nearby Goseong on the east coast.

The fire erupted on Monday night and spread rapidly, forcing about 2,000 residents to evacuate their mountainous villages in the middle of the night.

The authorities mobilized helicopters and fire trucks and police officers to try to contain the blaze, a feat made more problematic by the dry conditions and strong winds.
