Hongyemun, the central passage of Namdaemun Gate (Sungnyemun, National treasure No.1), has reopened to the public on March 3, and will be open between 10:00 and 17:00 daily. Hongyemun’s unique characteristic is its upper head, which is in the shape of a rainbow.
The central passage of Namdaemun Gate has been shut down for 100 years because the surrounding walls of Namdaemun had been destroyed to make roads and railways in 1907 during the Japanese colonial period, and later it had to be reconstructed.
To celebrate its reopening, special events will be held in the square of Namdaemun from 10:00 to 16:00 including a parade around the gate performed by soldiers and a reenactment of the guard–changing ceremony during Joseon Dynasty. |
