Host Requirements

To be classified as a homestay Host, your home can only accept a maximum of three students at any one time (Over 18 years) and two students (If Under 18 years)

Under the Tenancy Act in Victoria,  when four (4) or more rooms are provided, the accommodation is considered to be a Room House or Boarding House.  Rooming Houses or Boarding Houses are not a part of the Homestay program.  The Tenancy Act is basically the same in each state of Australia.

Therefore, if you are housing more than 3 students at any one time, you are not a Homestay. You are not covered by insurance. You may also be required to have smoke alarms in your home that are "hard wired",  Exit signs and Health Department registration as you are providing food on a commercial basis.

You must also reside in the same home as the students. Separate dwellings do not qualify unless they are located on the same block as your home.  i.e. a bungalow

The homestay should provide a clean, tidy, safe and friendly environment, with reasonable access to public transport. Unless otherwise requested, the homestay must provide a single room with access to a study area, either in the room or elsewhere in the home.

The homestay family must provide supervision appropriate to the age and maturity of the student and their familiarity with life in Australia. This supervision includes out-of-school hours, study and pastoral care.

The accommodation and facilities provided by the homestay must meet Homestay Australia’s requirements for a safe and secure environment and any changes must be notified to Homestay Australia P/L.

No student will be placed with a homestay until it has been inspected and approved, and the Working With Children Card or Check, Police Check or Blue Card  has been provided.

Any homestay family ‘rules’ must be explained to the student as soon as possible after arrival. The homestay specific rules must be vetted by Homestay Australia P/L.

The host family will inform Homestay Australia P/L of any aspects of a student’s behavior and /or attitude which may impact on their studies and/or their stay in Australia.

The student must provide 2 week’s notice if leaving homestay.
